The Complete Guide to UK Visa Document Checklists

The most common question we are asked is "what documents do I need?" The honest answer is that it depends on you as much as on the visa. This guide shows you the documents almost everyone needs, twelve checklists by circumstance, and a timeline for getting them ready.

Before you start

There is no one-size-fits-all checklist

Two people applying for the same visa can be asked for very different evidence. Three reasons why.

01

The form is only the surface

The online application asks a fraction of what the Immigration Rules and Home Office caseworker guidance require. Decision-makers assess your application against all of it, including requirements the form never mentions.

02

Evidence has a prescribed form

Some rules set out exactly what a document must look like: which bank statements are acceptable, what a letter must contain, how dates must fall. The right document in the wrong format may be given little or no weight.

03

You are decided on what you submit

Caseworkers can sometimes ask for missing information, but this is limited and at their discretion. Applications are generally decided on the evidence in front of them, so a conservative, well-organised bundle matters.

The guide gives you a starting list built from your circumstances, so you know what to gather before anyone asks for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one document checklist for each UK visa?

No. The documents required depend on your own circumstances as well as the route. Two people applying for the same visa can be asked for different evidence depending on where they have lived, their family situation, their finances and their immigration history.

Which documents does almost every applicant need?

A current passport or travel document, previous passports containing UK visas or stamps, proof of current immigration status such as an eVisa share code, the completed online application and payment confirmation including the Immigration Health Surcharge reference, and a biometrics appointment confirmation or confirmation that you can use the ID Check app.

What happens if a document is missing?

Applications are generally decided on the evidence submitted with them. Caseworkers can sometimes ask for missing information, but this is limited and at their discretion, so it should not be relied on. Missing or non-compliant evidence is a common cause of refusal.

Do I need to translate documents that are not in English?

Yes. Documents not in English or Welsh need a certified translation, submitted alongside the original document.

Is the guide legal advice?

No. It is general guidance and a starting point for organising your documents. It is not exhaustive and is not advice on your individual case. A regulated adviser can confirm the full list that applies to you.
